Ferrari, the legendary name in motorsport, is venturing into uncharted waters with a bold and futuristic sailing yacht project—Hypersail. This record-breaking, high-performance yacht embodies the brand’s relentless pursuit of innovation, merging its racing DNA with the world of competitive ocean sailing.
A Ferrari Like No Other
Stretching over 100 feet in length, equipped with twin steering wheels, and designed to “fly” above the waves, the Hypersail yacht is unlike anything Ferrari has ever produced. Designed to accommodate more than eight passengers, this cutting-edge vessel was unveiled at Ferrari’s headquarters in Maranello during a high-profile event attended by international media and key figures, including Ferrari Executive Chairman John Elkann and world-famous solo sailor Giovanni Soldini, who leads the Hypersail team.
Pushing Boundaries at Sea
According to Elkann, Hypersail represents Ferrari’s commitment to innovation and endurance—qualities deeply rooted in the company’s history. “This project challenges us to go beyond our limits and broaden our technological vision,” he said. Drawing inspiration from Ferrari’s Hypercar, which has dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 2023, the Hypersail continues the tradition of endurance racing in a completely new environment.
Giovanni Soldini, who plays a pivotal role in assembling the sailing crew, highlighted how the collaboration between Ferrari engineers and yacht designers has unlocked unprecedented possibilities. “It’s an extraordinary challenge, both in design and technology,” he explained. “From the way it’s built to how it flies above the water, this yacht incorporates innovative control systems never before seen on board.”
Why Sailing?
For Ferrari, the transition to the sea was a natural evolution. Elkann summed it up perfectly: “Passion and expertise in pursuit of the impossible.” Oceanic yacht racing is considered the ultimate test of endurance, where conditions are unpredictable and the stakes are always high—much like the legendary races that have defined Ferrari’s legacy.
Shared Technology Between Land and Sea
At first glance, supercars and sailing yachts may seem worlds apart. But Ferrari’s engineers point out how principles such as aerodynamics, load distribution, and materials like carbon fibre and advanced batteries apply to both. Chief Technology Officer Matteo Lanzavecchia revealed that the project has already led to nine patents, demonstrating how much innovation Hypersail is bringing to the table.
One of the biggest challenges, according to Soldini, is maintaining stability at high speeds. Ferrari’s experience with suspension control systems in their cars has been adapted to the yacht, ensuring it remains stable even when lifted above the water on its foils in strong winds and rough seas.
What Makes Hypersail Unique?
While details about the shipyard remain confidential, Ferrari has shared some fascinating insights about the yacht:
Full Foiling: Two wing-like foils lift the yacht above the surface, reducing drag and allowing it to glide across the waves.
Sustainable Power: Hypersail will be entirely powered by renewable energy—wind and solar—showcasing Ferrari’s commitment to sustainability.
First of Its Kind: While foiling yachts exist (like those seen in the America’s Cup), Hypersail aims to be the first to cross oceans with this level of autonomy, efficiency, and performance.
In-House Expertise: Around 90% of the yacht’s prototype components are being built at the same Maranello factory that produces iconic models like the Daytona SP3 and F80.
A New Chapter in Ferrari’s Legacy
Described by Elkann as “closer to a spaceship than a boat,” Hypersail represents a thrilling new chapter in Ferrari’s story. This pioneering vessel will bring the Prancing Horse to a global audience of sailing and racing enthusiasts alike, extending its influence far beyond the racetrack.
When the yacht is fully unveiled in 2026, the sight of Ferrari’s emblem soaring across the ocean will surely excite fans just as much as watching a Ferrari cross the finish line at Le Mans.
For those passionate about luxury, speed, and innovation—both on land and at sea—Hypersail promises to be the ultimate symbol of endurance and excellence.
