In a bold move toward eco-friendly innovation, Sunreef Yachts has officially stepped away from the use of traditional teak decking—a decision that reflects the brand’s deepening commitment to sustainability in luxury yacht design.
Nicolas Lapp, Chief Technical Officer and co-founder of Sunreef Yachts, explains that the shift represents a natural evolution for the company: “Continuing with teak simply no longer fits our philosophy. We’re embracing materials that are both environmentally responsible and equally refined in appearance.”

A New Standard for Yacht Decking
After extensive research and development, Sunreef’s engineering team tested eight alternatives before selecting a trio of new materials — two natural wood-based options and one non-wood composite. The results have exceeded expectations. One thermally modified wood, for instance, offers up to 16% lower surface heat and 25% better insulation, enhancing onboard comfort while improving energy efficiency.
Sustainability
Teak has long been synonymous with luxury, but Sunreef’s clients have shown a clear appetite for innovation. “Today’s yacht owners are design-savvy and environmentally conscious,” Lapp notes. “Once they see that these new materials retain the elegance of teak while reducing ecological impact, the response is overwhelmingly positive.”
This progressive mindset aligns perfectly with the demands of the modern luxury yacht charter market, where travellers increasingly value sustainability as much as style and performance.

Easier Maintenance, Greater Durability
Beyond environmental benefits, the new decking materials offer remarkable practicality. Traditional teak is notorious for its maintenance challenges — particularly its sensitivity to stains and discolouration. Sunreef’s alternatives are not only more resistant to wear but also easier to clean, featuring specialised coatings that make them virtually stain-proof.

A Tailored Approach for Performance Models
For sportier designs such as the ULTIMA 55 hybrid catamaran, Sunreef opted for a lightweight synthetic material that maintains the brand’s eco-focus while optimising performance.
Through innovation and forward thinking, Sunreef Yachts continues to redefine what sustainability means in the world of luxury yacht charter, proving that responsibility and refinement can sail hand in hand.
